Radar visibility a hot potato at IMO
Monday 16 July 2001

The issue of radar visibility is now a hot potato at the International Maritime Organisation. Concern has been expressed in many quarters that the current requirement for radar reflectors (10 square metre radar cross section) is inadequate particularly given the increased speed of commercial shipping. Active consideration is now being given to increasing the requirement for offshore boats under 150 tons to 30 square metres, a change which will involve an increase in the size and weight of the traditional reflector. Sea-me significantly exceeds even this higher figure.
